REPORT ON THE “AI-NURECC PLUS CONFERENCE ON CREATIVE AND CULTURAL INDUSTRIES IN THE ADRIATIC-IONIAN REGION” 01/12/2021

On December 1st, 2021, the AI-NURECC PLUS Conference on Creative and Cultural Industries in the Adriatic-Ionian region was held. The aim of this conference was to contextualise and start mapping the variety of Creative and Cultural Industries (CCIs) existing in the Adriatic and Ionian region. The different kinds of social and economic benefits they can produce, distinguishing between three functional configurations, were at the center of the discussion. The first concerns the educational value of the cultural sector, mainly linked to the realm of public spending for conservation and fruition. The second refers to the economic function of cultural and creative industries, where CCIs are considered for their capacity to generate wealth and income. The third one looks at the economic and physical regeneration that CCIs can play in the process of economic de-industrialization that is affecting urban systems. Ultimately, the conference focused on the centrality of culture in generating positive change, transformation and creative impulses in individual behaviour. Its capacity to unlock frozen behaviours and generate new ideas for facing the complex challenges of our time. By inviting scholars and practitioners in the field, we aim to systematize and understand the potential of CCIs for the Adriatic and Ionian region. Opening Session: “AI-NURECC PLUS AS A PLATFORM FOR THE CREATIVE AND CULTURAL INDUSTRIES OF THE ADRIATIC AND IONIAN REGION” Moderated by Silvia Mangialardo, Head of International Relations Office at Marche Polytechnic University and Representative of UniAdrion, the Opening Session saw greetings from the three Fora presidents. Fatbardh Sallaku, President of the Association of Universities of the Adriatic-Ionian (UniAdrion) – AI-NURECC PLUS Partner, and Rector of the Agricultural University of Tirana, expressed his greeting and his pleasure to be invited to the AI-NURECC PLUS event on Cultural and Creative Industries in the Adriatic and Ionian Region. “The importance of this event is not only for the theme, but also for the collaboration and the number of participants which shows the need and importance of this type of relationship”. The President underlined that the University network must be considered as a crucial point for our future, especially today. The President also suggested a follow-up to this conference called “Creative and cultural relationship and communication” between our Universities and the other players in the area. The President concluded saying: “We are very close to each other but sometimes we lack this kind of information. It is important to know how universities think about competing in this kind of environment!”. Joze Tomaš, President of the Forum of the Adriatic and Ionian Chambers of Commerce (Forum AIC) – AI-NURECC PLUS Partner, after having presented the Association: “Despite this forced shutdown caused by the pandemic, we strongly wanted the theme of CCIs to be at the core of the AI-NURECC PLUS initiative, which has the objective of identifying and giving credit to the most important cultural and creative sectors in the area. The synergies between the AI-NURECC stakeholders are essential to ensure the development of Cultural and Creative Industries: from university training to the support of local and regional actors (just consider the experiences of the UNESCO cultural and creative cities) and also to the support of chambers of commerce and the economic -financial world”, President Tomaš said. Moreover, Forum AIC supports young generations who want to work in the cultural and creative industry through several initiatives and projects. Among these it is worth mentioning the Adriatic Startup school – promoted by Ecapital Culture in collaboration with the first edition of AI-NURECC initiative – aimed at developing the skills of young people for the realization of a Business Plan in the cultural field and the creation of a start-up for the enhancement of the cultural heritage of the Adriatic-Ionian Region. The Forum AIC president concluded by mentioning that next year the association will be celebrating the twenty-years-anniversary of the establishment of Forum AIC in Split, Croatia; and it will be consecrated precisely to the Creative and Cultural sphere. “We would like to make sure that during the event the cultural and artistic peculiarities of the various countries are enhanced as much as possible, giving the floor to the first source of wealth of the entire Adriatic Ionian Area”. Ioannis Lolos, President of the Forum of Adriatic and Ionian Cities (FAIC) – AI-NURECC PLUS Partner. He briefly presented the FAIC Association, whose aim is to represent a tool for economic, political, cultural and human cooperation, broadly in line with the European Union Strategy for the Adriatic Ionian Region (EUSAIR). All the 43 cities members to the FAIC are cultural and creative cities, where “cultural”, according to the UNESCO declaration of 1982, means the complex of spiritual, material, intellectual and emotional characteristics that characterize a society or social group. “Our cities express all these levels of “culture” in a remarkable way: we have a millennial cultural heritage, representing a culture over the century, which is still visible in our cities today; it is reflected in the products we produce and in the way of our lives. Our cities can be at the heart of this process. The cultural and creative industries will play this important role in the Adriatic and the Ionian, as they are characterized by a high level of innovation and creativity and are closely linked to local communities and regional networks, contributing to the transition to a “sustainable”, “smart” and an “inclusive” economy. Moreover and above all, it requires a system of values and a social tension that our communities are certainly capable of facing and leading”. After Presidents’ speeches, it was the turn of: Stavros Kalognomos, Executive Secretary of the Balkan and Black Sea Commission (BBSC),Conference of Peripheral Maritime Regions (CPMR) – AI-NURECC PLUS Coordinator. He opened by saying that AI-NURECC Plus is a capitalization of the results of the AI-NURECC initiative and the thematic of the Cultural and Creative Regional Ecosystems, elaborated by AI-NURECC partners, demonstrates how projects work. Creative and cultural industries are mentioned as one of the studies for the next period. This AI-NURECC
Report_Webinar “Preservation of Natural resources, Innovation and Robotics for the development of the economy in the Adriatic-Ionian Region”, 27/01/2021
The primary determinant of all development strategies in Europe is the investment in research and development; in other words, innovations that have application in the economy. On the other hand, global society is entering the phase of a new revolution, at the center of robotics. Robotics will mark all spheres of society. To participate in this market competition, we must recognize this as a priority and insist on putting this in all our strategies and making future efforts in the direction of encouraging innovation through the application of robotics. The Webinar “Preservation of Natural resources, Innovation and Robotics for the development of the economy in the Adriatic-Ionian Region”, which was held on January 27 at 14:30, was organized in cooperation with the Croatian Chamber of Economy – Dubrovnik County Chamber, AND aimed at drawing attention within the Adriatic-Ionian Region to the opportunities provided to us through increased investment in innovation and robotics. The exchange of experiences, knowledge, the formation of centers of excellence, technological hubs will undoubtedly generate results over the years. An important role in this matter is preserving the most critical resource (the Sea that binds us together), respect for natural capacities, and the use of robotics to prevent certain unfavorable circumstances in the Adriatic-Ionian Region. Moderating the debate Nikolina Trojić, President of the Croatian Chamber of Economy – Dubrovnik County Chamber – Croatia. The meeting opened with greetings from the President of the Marche Chamber of Commerce and of the Forum of the Adriatic and Ionian Chambers of Commerce, Gino Sabatini, who greeted all the participants to the second of the three Side-Events organized by the Forum with AII and the Slovenian Presidency. “These events, organized by the Forum during this very special period, are in my opinion, a great opportunity to cooperate and to develop important subjects such as the one of today. Robotics is of central interest in our territories, and the EU is very much concentrated on it. All sectors are touched by it, both public and private, and this pandemic will boost and accelerate this new way of approaching life and work. It is always thought that robotics will in some way steal jobs, but I am strongly convinced that it will instead create job opportunities for future generations”. President Sabatini also remembered the important addition to the Forum of Adriatic and Ionian Chambers of commerce: the Chamber of Commerce and industry of Primorska, Slovenia, which will join the Forum force soon. Ivan Barbaric (Vice President for the international and EU Affairs of Croatian Chamber of Economy) remarked that this year is proving itself to be one of the most complex and difficult of all recent times, due the pandemic and also the earthquakes that hit Croatia recently. The Adriatic and Ionian Initiative demonstrated how the economic sector is able to create strong network and beat up the crisis. Institutions have to create the right conditions to innovate and make good use of all the new robotics and technological discoveries. The ambassador Milan Jazbec (AII Chairman-in-office, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Slovenia) underlined the importance of the subject addressed during the webinar, stressing the fact that we all need to be aware that technological innovation makes our lives better and it makes us move fast forward, also in doing our job as a community network. The ambassador Fabio Pigliapoco (Adriatic Ionian Initiative Permanent Secretariat) then confirmed what he already said in the morning during the first webinar: that the AII Secretariat is by the Fora’s side, to support their initiatives, since the Fora are in fact the heart and blood of the EUSAIR Strategy and their work is precious. That is why AII is happy to include these events in the framework of the V EUSAIR FORUM. The first part of the Webinar focused on Crisis Cooperation of Science and Economy; The meeting was opened by Mateo Ivanac (Department of Innovations of Croatian Chamber of Economy) with his exposition: Croatia Establishment of the Adriatic Sea protection ecosystem with the help of underwater robotics and sensors for conservation and monitoring of sustainability in the Adriatic Sea: INOVAMARE PROJECT, who presented the Project involving Croatia and Italy. The aim of the project is to develop and establish cross-border innovation ecosystem model in area of underwater robotics and sensors for proposes of monitoring and prevent sea pollution with mission oriented on sustainability of the Adriatic Sea. The project wants to raise collaboration of innovation players and give them mechanisms and tools to boost development of new innovative solutions in area of underwater robotics and sensors. Professor David Scaradozzi (Polytechnic University of Marche, Italy) with his exposition: Marine monitoring and intervention, where Europe is and where the industrial-academic research are going followed what already shown and presented by his predecessor and added a keyword, which he finds essential: synergy. He then offered participants a general overview on the UNIVPM contributions to the marine cause. The European Union pays a lot of attention to the Sea and it is interesting to notice how in the past the Sea was considered to be an obstacle or in any case something that divides; if we stop to consider it more attentively we understand that, since men started navigating, the Sea was the first and unique point of contact. From the European point of view the scope and the dimensions of intervention are multiple, so us at the UNIM are putting together multiple different types of competencies (scientific, economic, technological…). Professor Scaradozzi also reminds the attendees about the UNESCO’s goal number 14, which is specifically devoted to “Life below Water “ The second session of the webinar was dedicated to Europe and Innovation (as a basis for further development of economic opportunities and economic growth): Dario Marenić (director of ELDA ltd., Croatia) showed a visual presentation of a new product to sanitize hands and described the immediate response of his company to the crisis, which made

It was witnessed by Mr Stjepan Glas, PhD, a Minister Plenipotentiary in the Embassy of the Republic of Croatia in the Republic of Serbia as well as Mr Tamás Bakó, Head of the Economic and Commercial Office of the Embassy of Hungary in the Republic of Serbia. That is why AIC Forum, at the level of the Adriatic and Ionian Region, joined the AI-NURECC initiative that gathers associations of cities, universities, regions and chambers of commerce of the area, together with lead partner CPMR (Conference of the Peripheral Maritime Regions) in order to give contribution to the realization of the EUSAIR Strategy. The intention of the signing of the Memorandum is to connect with partners from the Danube Region in order to strengthen relationships, exchange good practices, work on joint projects and other activities that can contribute to the realization of both EUSAIR as well as EUSDR Strategy.
