Background and Objectives

The Adriatic Ionian Network of Universities, Regions, Chambers of Commerce and Cities (AI-NURECC PLUS), is a preliminary action funded by DG REGIO that benefits from the results of the AI-NURECC initiative, which ended in December 2019 .

The objective of the latter was to promote the region’s economic and social, increasing its competitiveness, interconnection and arousing greater tourist interest in the area. The EUSAIR strategy was officially launched by the European Commission in June 2014 and approved by the Council of the European Union in October 2014. It includes 8 countries, including 4 EU member states: Italy, Slovenia, Croatia, Greece, Bosnia and Herzegovina , Serbia, Montenegro and Albania.

The AI-NURECC PLUS initiative aims to support the EU Strategy for the Adriatic and Ionian Regions (EUSAIR) by implementing and ensuring a wide and deep territorial coverage, while strengthening the appropriation by the Regional and Locales of the main objectives and opportunities in the cross-cutting topics of the EUSAIR: “Research and Innovation”, “Development of SMEs”, and “Development of Skills”. AI-NURECC PLUS will therefore support entrepreneurship activities, transnational clusters and digital innovation center activities for EUSAIR.

Particular attention will be paid to young people, also through initiatives aimed at sport, integration and social inclusion, tools that should further encourage sustainable development, cohesion and solidarity of communities in the area. AI-NURECC PLUS also aims to encourage networking and collaboration between public and private sector representatives and civil society to promote coordination between EU, national, regional and local policies to develop the circular economy .

The project will focus on 3 macro sectors:

  1. Sustainable tourism;
  2. Cultural and Creative Industry;
  3. Circular Economy.

AI-NURECC PLUS activities will also contribute to the implementation of the objectives in the thematic area on Regional Cultural and Creative Ecosystems (CCRE-S3) in the EUSAIR area.
CCRE-S3 is the final result of AI-NURECC and the first thematic area with a specific focus on a Macroregional Strategy.
