Stolac is a small town in south-east of Bosnia and Herzegovina and a part of the same municipality. It is located on a travel route which passes Herzegovina from Bosnia to the Adriatic coast, on a watershed of river Bregava, on an intersection of roads for Sarajevo, Mostar, Dubrovnik, Split, Čapljina, Trebinje, and furthermore towards Montenegro and Albania.
The presence of human community in the area of Stolac dates back 16,000 years ago. Therefore, this area is a hiding place of prehistoric people, a fortress of Illyria, an ancient municipality, a medieval city, a resting place of the stećak headstones, a resort ofbeys, Austro-Hungarian visit and much more. The Municipality of Stolac has 30 monuments on the list of National Monuments of Bosnia and Herzegovina, two of which are on the UNESCO World Heritage List.

 

HOW TO GET THERE

  1. The nearest international airport in BiH is located in Mostar, 37 km away from Stolac (main road M 17.3) The nearest railway station in BiH is located also in Mostar (37 km far from Stolac).
  2. International airport in Sarajevo is 161km away from Stolac ( via E73/M17 higway and main road), alsa as railway station Sarajevo.
  3. The nearest international airport in Croatia is located in Dubrovnik, 103 km form Stolac, with excellent connections with other airports. From Dubrovnik to Stolac, the main magistral road M6 leads via Trebinje. Also, international port of Dubrovnik is 130 km from Stolac.

CAN'T MISS

  1. In the centre of the Stolac valley lies the čaršija (Ottoman central town district) and in its own centre the Čaršija mosque with the Great tepa (market square). The Čaršija mosque was built in 1519 and represents the oldest larger building in the čaršija of Stolac.
  2. The space between the Podgrad bridge and the Podgrad mosque was called Mejdan (trade centre) or Little Čaršija, and it was used for trading agricultural goods, clothes and other products.
  3. Begovina is a residential estate of the feudal family Rizvanbegović, built in the mid-19th century. The residential estate Begovina consist of four parts representing a gradation of space from the public to the private, family part.
  4. The stećci, i.e. standing stones, is the name given to a specific type of monolithic monuments. The area of Stolac is one of the richest in terms of the number and quality of standing stones, with 3 nearby necropolises (Radimlja, Boljuni, Potkuk) enjoying the status of UNESCO World Heritage sites. Radimlja necropolis is located in Vidovo polje, 3 km west of Stolac, on the road Capljina - Stolac. Radimlje necropolis is one of the most valuable monuments of the medieval period of Bosnia and Herzegovina in terms of the number of specimens, variety and representation of all basic forms. The necropolis consists of 133 stećak tombstones.
